Dhuri MLA stages dharna against govt high handedness

SANGRUR: Punjab Congress general secretary and Dhuri MLA Arvind Khanna today lead a dharna by hundreds of Congress workers at Dhuri protesting against the high handedness of the government to fraudulently remove the Dhuri Block Samiti president Krishna Devi.

Khanna disclosed that in the 15 member Block Samiti Congress has the support of 10 members. However, the state government tried to force and pressurize the SDM Sunam to get forged signatures of some members seeking her removal which would have been illegal.

The MLA said, the Congress only wanted that the SDM should hold a proper meeting of the Samiti members and bring in a vote of no confidence if they want to remove Krishna Devi.

The SDM tried to put off the meeting indefinitely. However, after the Congress workers staged the dharna and forced him to announce the date, it was decided that the Block Samiti’s meeting will be held on Monday.

Khanna said, “we have the support of at least ten members and if the Akalis feel they have the majority let them bring in the motion (of no confidence) on Monday”. He said, the Congress will not allow any high handedness and will use all the democratic means to prevent it.
