HOSHIARPUR: There is no law for taking any action against NRIs living in Canada who fraudulently marry girls in India during their short visits here and later desert them. These NRIs ruin the lives of their brides.
The parents of every girl should verify facts of the NRI boy to whom they are going to marry off their daughter before solemnising the marriage.
This was stated by MLA of Edmonton-Ellerslie Constituency, Alberta state of Canada, Naresh Bhardwaj, who was here on a private visit, here on Saturday.
A number of Indian brides had been suffering at the hands of NRI grooms, but none of the sufferers had ever reported the matter to the Canadian government. He would make all possible efforts to rehabilitate such victims, if the parents approached him in this connection, he said.
Comparing politicians of India and Canada, Bhardwaj said politicians in Canada generally opted for politics to serve the people. He belonged to Pandori Nizran village of Jalandhar and after completing matriculation, he went to Canada in 1976.
After settling there, he joined the Progressive Conservative Party to serve the people. More than one lakh Punjabis have been living in Alberta.
The Alberta assembly comprising 83 members had five Punjabis elected as MLAs.
Referring to the ongoing recession in the world, he said the Canadian government was financially sound.
There was a great demand of workers i.e. labourers and technical experts in Alberta state a year ago. The recession in every field had restricted the demand to a great extent which would again be increased soon after the end of the recession.
Cautioning the Punjabi youths seeking immigration to Canada not to be misled by unscrupulous elements, Bhardwaj exhorted them to directly approach the Canadian High Commission in this regard.
