SGPC writes to PM for Sikh traffic warden in Pakistan

AMRITSAR: Shriomani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Avtar Singh Makkar in a letter written to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has urged to hold talk with the Pakistani counterpart with regard to resignation tendered by the Sikh policeman at Lahore.

 



Makkar urged Dr. Singh that in view of worldwide ramifications of such incidents, it is requested that Government of Pakistan may kindly be approached to take serious notice of this incident, and keep up the morale of aggrieved Sikh by not accepting his resignation.

Makkar in his letter to PM said that secular credential of Pakistan have received dent when a lone Sikh who joined his duty as traffic warden but resigned under sneer on his Sikh identity and callous indifference of higher authorities of Pakistan.

SGPC has also sent the copy of the letter to High Commissioner of Pakistan at Chankyapuri, New Delhi for information and necessary action.

It may be mentioned here that Gulab Singh, the only Sikh warden in traffic police in Lahore, reportedly resigned last weekend after one his colleagues misbehaved with him and even tossed up his turban. After submitting his resignation, Gulab said that it was a routine affair that his colleagues misbehaved with him and made fun of him being a Sikh.

Guldab Singh had said that that he was being discriminated and his Muslim colleagues always made fun of his religion. Singh often took his complaints to his seniors, but they did not take the matter seriously, because of which he was forced to resign.
