JMMU: An army jawan allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon in Birpur area of the district, a defence spokesman said here Friday.

Naik Mahinder Singh of 8 Dogra regiment shot himself in his stomach while he was on sentry duty in Birpur area Thursday, he said.

The injured jawan was rushed to military hospital for treatment. He was operated upon by doctors but his condition deteriorated and he succumbed to injuries Thursday night, the spokesman said.

Army has ordered a court of inquiry into the incident.
