KOLKATA: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee continuing with his unprecedented action against MPs has warned them of even more stringent steps against erring Lok Sabha members in future, whether they belong to the Opposition, the ruling party or the Left.
He has warned that next time MPs misbehave in Parliament, he will not refer them to the privileges committee but take unilateral action against them. The Speaker's warning comes days after 32 MPs - all but one of the NDA - were referred to the privileges committee for their disorderly conduct on April 24. ''I am warning through you each one of them that next time there may not be reference to privilege committee. I will not tolerate breach of discipline just for the sake of it,'' he says. Chatterjee denies being partisan or punitive and says had he been so motivated, he could have suspended the MPs right away. ''I could have given punishment. There is a specific rule in the rule book now that any member entering the well of the house will automatically be suspended for 5 days, if I'm not mistaken,'' he says. The current session of the House is scheduled to end on May 9 and the privileges committee report on the matter is unlikely to be ready by then.
