From dawn to dust each day of every woman in the country passes away thinking, how to improve her dignity. Even those ones who have acquired some status in this men's world, feel like grabbing a top most position from where they can rule over men and would have no fear of disgrace, insult, inequality, prejudice and mental and physical agony.

This psychology might seems to be unwanted, strange and autocratic but if we put a little strain on our minds then surely we can acknowledge this fact that since centuries women of our so called democratic society have been given a meaningless place. A Place where they can only wash clothes, clean utensils, clean floor, cook food and serve their masters and children. Not even this, women of our country have suffered a lot more.

There was a time when girls had no right to come to this planet and take a single breath of air. Before a girl child could feel the meaning of life they were killed. Many ways were discovered to kill a newborn baby girl. But some wise people thought that if a girl child have to b killed then why to waste time waiting for nine months, why not kill her before taking birth- so female foeticide came into being But somehow some girls luckily got a chance to see life which for them was not an easier to live. They were married off as soon as any groom-younger or older, wanted to marry her. Whether the girl wanted to marry or not, whether she was an adult or not, were not at all questions of those days.

God forsake, if husband of a woman died before her death then she was also not supposed to live any longer. She had to donate her life happily in the pyre of her husband. These were not the only methods of savagery against women. A lot more were also invented by the prides of modern men.

Dowry, another curse on women, killed thousands and thousands of fairer sex and better half of men. Not to get surprised in most of the cases women were killed by women only- sometimes in the form of mother-in-law and sometimes sister-in-law comes forward to put kerosene on a newly wed. Role of other family members was only to burn a matchstick-not a big deal to do, isn't it?

Britishers ruled over India and were considered as enemies who suppressed poor and weak innocent people of India. Strange but true it was a Britisher who for the first time raised voice against. sati, child marriage and widow remarriage. And with their grace Laws and Acts for the help of women came into being. This was a legal boon for women at that time. Thus foe for men became well wisher for women.

No doubt immediate implementation of the law was not possible but it surely helped in the long run. India awakened slowly and slowly, giving a way to women to study and to get empowered but this doesn't mean that abuses and brutality against the weaker sex, faded away, infact it continued, lesser in the form of sati, child marriage and dowry killing but larger in form of rape, physical abuse and moral agony. But the way Indian legal system is empowering Indian women; a day will come when women of the country will truly feel safe and free.

The Supreme Court’s took a great step by asking the centre and the states to notify the rules for compulsory registration of marriages. This order comes as a beacon of hope to thousands of women who are illiterate, widowed, or abandoned and who are unable to fight for their rights. This law will stand with them to check child marriage; bigamy & NRI fake marriage promises.

Although India being a signatory to international laws, including CEDAW (Convention of Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women), is committed to registration of marriages but it is the recent Supreme Court order that has put pressure on the government to make marriage registration mandatory, says Shruti Pandey of the Human Rights Law Network.

This law will enable women to hold property and keep an eye on bigamy as well.  Many men, across the country have more than one partner, sometimes even three to four. The woman who is otherwise his legal, spiritual and social wife, who has taken pious seven Pheras (knots), is left alone. This law, when implemented could prosecute bigamy. Recent news of well renowned singer Udit Narayan’s bigamy has put a stamp on the dual marriage relationships prevailing in our Indian society. When a high profile person commits crime people get hurt but when he gets punished according to the law people get a lesson. Now it is too be seen how this law acts against Mr. Singer.

Another important power of this marriage registration law will be abolition of child marriage, thus swing hundreds of young girls and boys from this curse. Adding more benefit to it, this law can empower those women who are duped by NRI husbands and abandoned by them at one pretext or another. A legal document of marriage could deter those NRIs.

Those who marry under Hindu Marriage Act are the biggest benefactors of the mandatory registration of marriages. Christian marriages are registered in the church by the priest. So are Muslim marriages- the Nikhanama, has the signatures of the Kazi. Parsi marriages too enter a record.

Now, all these registered marriages should be under one authorized register. However, some people are of the view that marriage registration won't work in Indian society where paper work is difficult to execute.
