PATIALA: The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has been gearing up for Delhi assembly elections, which is schedule to be held later in this year. The party will not leave any stone unturned to recapture Delhi assembly after ten years.
BJP sources said here Monday that the senior leaders felt that Delhi Sikh Akali Dal's president Harwinder Singh sarna and his brother and DSGMC's President Paramjit Singh Sarna have been holding key of Sikh vote in Delhi. BJP's prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishan Advani has reportedly told Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh badal and SAD's president Sukhbir singh badal that BJP itself cable to woo sarnas brothers for their support for bjp. For garnering support for BJP in Delhi SAD in this pretext SAD's president have forced to got resignation of Onkar Singh Thapar President of its Delhi unit and made Manjit Singh GK, son of late Santhok Singh, its president. BJP has deputed senior party functionary and in charge of J&K for party affaires, R. P. Singh, to contact Sikhs and Sikh leaders in Punjab who can impress upon Sarna brothers for BJP. In this context RP Singh has met Manjit Singh Calcutta in Amritsar quietly in last week. Calcutta is a sad's dissident's leader and having close proximity with Paramjit Singh Sarna. The Congress had virtually controlled Sikh socio-religious affairs in Delhi through Jathedar Santokh Singh till he was shot dead in the early 80s. After his killing, the DSGMC held no elections for more than 15 years during which the Congress lost its Sikh support base because of Operation Blue star and the 1984 riots. With the BJP coming to power in Delhi, the general election to the DSGMC was held in 1995, which the Akalis swept, ousting Congress loyalists from the committee. But with the sarna brothers has managed to capture dsgmc in 2002 on sad ticket after that they have made its own party. They have managed to extend the term of dsgmc executive for two years with the support of Delhi's chief minister Sheila Dixshit in February this year.
Now BJP wanted to have support of Sarna brothers for the assembly elections as well as coming parliament elections. Paramjit Singh Sarna has kept his options open and said when contacted that "We will support only that party who will work for the betterment of the Sikhs". Sarna said over phone from Delhi we the Sikhs in Delhi are free to support any political party which used to understand problems of the Sikhs. He however denied that any bjp leader met him to seek support for the delhi assembly elections.
