FATEHGARH SAHIB: A 25 year old married youth Sanjiv Chopra, a resident of Mohalla, Dalichi, Sirhind allegedly committee suicide by consuming some poisonous substance. He had breathed his last at PGIMR, Chandigarh.

A few days back, Mani Kiran, a 19-year-old girl of village Chanalo near Sirhind had allegedly committed suicide and her father Dharmpal alleged that her daughter was harassed by a youth Sanjiv Chopra, with whom she had reportedly eloped last year.  After the death of the girl, on the statement of the girl's father, the Sirhind police registered a case under section 306 of the IPC against Sanjiv Chopra, who was running a stationary shop near Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib. Dharmpal alleged that Sanjiv was harassing her daughter and  threatened her to give statement in his favour in a court case.

After the death of Mani Kiran, Sanjeev allegedly committed suicide recently.  On the statement of Sanjeev’s brother Pardeep Chopra, the Fatehgarh Sahib police registered a case against Mani Kiran’s father Dharampal; mother Harbans Kaur, grand father Kishen Kumar under section 306, 34 of the IPC.

As per Pardeep Chopra his younger brother Sanjeev was married to a Nabha based girl six years ago and they had a 5 year old son. He said that his brother had fall in love with another girl Mani Kiran around 4-5 years ago and the girl parents were well aware of  this relationship. He said that the girl parents used to beat her.  He said that Sanjeev and Mani Kiran ran away from their home in May, 2007.

He said that on the statement of the girl’s father, a case of kidnapping and rape was registered against his brother and after arresting Sanjeev, the police sent him to Nabha jail, where he had to spend around 8 months and later released on bail from Punjab and Haryana High Court on February 4, 2008. He said his brother again developed relations with the girl after coming from the jail and both again ran away from their home after 14 days on February 18, 2008 but the girl parents caught them when they were taking food at a Dhaba at village Badali Aala Singh and threatened Sanjeev to eliminate him.

As per Pardeep Chopra, Mani Kiran statement was to be recorded on May 5 in a pending case against his brother but the girl father, mother and grandfather forced her to consume poisonous before hearing of the case but the girl’s parents falsely implicated his brother in a case that he compelled the girl to commit suicide.  Pardeep Singh his brother consumed some poisonous substance on May 7 and he was immediately admitted at Civil Hospital, Fatehgarh Sahib from where he was referred to the PGIMR, where he breathed his last on May 8.
