NAWANSHEHAR: Over 65 per cent of the 3.56 lakh voters in the district exercised their franchise in the zila parishad and block samiti polls today.
Contrary to the earlier beliefs that there may not be much enthusiasm among the voters for these polls, long lines of voters were seen from early in the morning in villages like Langroya, Barnala, Sanawa, Jadla and Usmanpur. At many places entire families had turned out to vote. These included colourful groups of women as well. In fact, at all the polling booths visited by the HT team, enthusiasm among the female voters appeared to be far more than was found among their male counterparts. Polling in the district was generally peaceful with no untoward incident being reported from anywhere. Voting was held for 10 zila parishad and 89 block samiti seats in the district here today. There were 33 contestants for zila parishad seats and 238 for block samiti seats in the district. Maximum polling (over 75 per cent) was witnessed in the Saroya block. A total of 546 booths at 447 polling stations had been set up for the purpose |
