CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has made a clean sweep in the zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections held on May 12, the results of which were declared on Wednesday.
The SAD has captured about 90 per cent of the seats in both local bodies in most of the districts. The SAD has won all seats in Faridkot district. Similarly, leaving a few seats, it has also succeeded in taking Bathinda, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Mansa, Ropar, Jalandhar, Mohali and Patiala districts. The BJP and Congress have made a meagre presence. The election was held for 18 out of the 20 zila parishads and 132 out of the 141 for block samiti seats. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had postponed the elections in certain zones. The SAD had high stakes in the rural elections. The village panchayat elections will be held on May 26. A SAD spokesman said that it was victory of the SAD-BJP alliance and people of Punjab. The detailed results of elections will be declared later, Election Commission sources said.
