CHANDIGARH: Dean of the Gian Sagar Colleges Dr AS Sekhon, on Wednesday gave a clarion call to nurses to come forward in a big way to serve humanity, particularly the people in the rural areas where health care was in a state of shambles.

Addressing faculty members and students of the Gian Sagar College of Nursing at a function to mark celebrations of the International Nursing Week, where he was the chief guest, Dr Sekhon said that paramedics could play an important role in making available healthcare at the doorstep of the rural populace.

The beginning of the function was marked by a panel discussion at the Gian Sagar College of Nursing. The week-long programme would include activities like panel discussion, debate and poster making competitions during the week.Dr Prem Verma, Principal of the Gian Sagar College of Nursing, highlighted the theme of the Nurses Day - "Nurses Leading Primary Health Care."

She said that the International Nurses Day (IND) is celebrated around the world every year to remember all of the valuable contributions nurses have made to the society. Nurses celebrate and raise the profile of their work in a variety of ways and events. The reason that Nurses Day is held on the each year is because this is the birth date of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing.

Dr Verma welcomed the chief guest Dr AS Sekhon who lighted the ceremonial lamp along with Harnam Singh, president of the Gian Sagar Educational and Charitable Trust.

Dr Kamaljit Singh, Chief Executive Officer of the Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, said that nurses deliver services wherever people are found- in homes, schools, workplaces, prisons, health and wellness clinics, and other community settings, as well as in hospitals and research centres. In virtually all countries, nurses constitute the largest health care provider group.

Dr Prem Verma emphasised the role of nurses in fostering and maintaining links between individuals, families, communities and the rest of the health care system, working both autonomously and collaboratively to prevent disease, and to promote, improve, maintain and restore health.
