Saturday, 24 May 2008

Manmohan singhAMRITSAR:  "I have come with only one wish in my heart to meet my childhood classmate Wasir-e–Azam of Hindustan Dr Manmohan Singh and invite him to his ancestral village of Gah in Pakistan, said an emotionally charged 76-year old Raja Mohammed Ali childhood classmate of the Indian Prime Minister from Pakistan in a special interaction with students and staff of the DAV Public School here on Saturday.

"Sara gaon ankhey bichey baitha hai unki mehman nawazi key liye (the whole village were eagerly awaiting his visit and accord him a royal welcome)", Raja told people in holy city where PM's family lived after shifting from Pakistan.

Before leaving for Delhi to meet 'Mohna', as he lovingly calls Dr.Manmohan Singh, Raja said that he had no appointment with PM. " I have only come on Hope and love bountiful in heart for my classmate. And further added that the ice was melting and the weather 'mausam ' between two countries was also changing for the better. " He is going to gift a Punjabi Jutti and  a "lachcha"(shawl) to PM along with two embroidered salwar kameez suits from Pakistan for PM's wife. He also unpacked and showed photographs of Katasraj Shrines and Village Gah that he wanted to gift to the PM.

Raja said that he was not able to come earlier because of visa hassles. Students enjoyed his little anecdotes about life in the village where he studied with Dr Manmohan Singh compared them to the "Krishan and Sudama"  from epic Mahabharta.

Raja said he  was not interested in politics and hope to see 'Mohna' at his residence and want to share and relive certain childhood moments about their classmates and also about the only girl classmate of theirs "Baqt Bano" who is no more.

He told the students that earlier he sent a 'pair of Chakwali tilley wali juttis" for the PM with the Pakistan delegation to India and said the whole village was excited to receive a letter from the Indian PM who acknowledged receiving the juttis and a laminated school registration record from them.

The PM had then written in urdu to District Nasim of Chakwal : "I am grateful and moved to receive a copy of old school Examination result of my ancestral town along with a pair of Chakwali shoes. These traditional shoes reminded me of my childhood memories. I am very much thankful to you for sending these things which reminded me my past. A few years ago, I came to know that i 'Bakht Bano' (only girl classmate ) had passed away. I was deeply shocked to hear this. If possible, please convey my condolence to her son Khizar Hayat….."

About himself he said he was a playful kind and had no interest in studies so left them after standard IV when the Kohli family (Dr.Manmohan Singh's family) left for India before Indo-Pak partition. He hoped that his visit to India and his dream to meet his classmate would help in bringing loving relationships between both countries.

Raja recalled childhood memories of PM's other friends including classmates Ghulam Mohammed , Shah Wali Khan and Mohammed Ashraf who studied with Mohna'.

Raja was fecilitated by DAV Principal Neera Sharma who also warmly welcomed VK Mahajan assistant Commissioner Customs who inaugurated the special session with Pak guest. Raja later in the evening boarded Amritsar-Delhi Shatabdi Express.
