PATIALA: The heavy rain here on Friday flooded most of the localities and claimed life of one person. The normal life was badly disrupted due to rain.

 

The deceased named 'Pardesi' (35) resident of Gorakhpur (UP) was killed when he was trying to clear rainy water from the basement of his shop in Tripuri area Friday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses said that Pardesi with his two associates went to clear basement of his shop , which was filled with rain water. He  lost his balance in deep water and lost  conscious too. He was brought out from the basement immediately by his associates and he died on the way to the hospital.   

The local meteorological office recorded a total of 92 mm rain in the city today. The sharp showers began early Friday morning and carried on till afternoon.

Walled city here was particularly hard hit. Heavy water also accumulated in Anardana chowk and Ragho Majra and other parts of city. The water of choked sewerage entered to the house of the low lying areas of the city. The residents protested and said that covering of 'Ganda Nullah' was the reason behind the choking of water. They alleged that MC authorities did not clear 'gandha Nallah' before the onset of rainy season. 

The Mini secretariat where the offices of Commissioner of Patiala Division, the deputy commissioner, SSP and other district headquarters were situated was flooded with water .

The Jacob Drain was overflowg – the cranes of Municipal Corporation were on task to remove silt and garbage from it.

The downpour is considered good for the sowing of paddy, which is planted on a large area in Punjab and Haryana, said BS Sohal Chief Agricultural Officer. He said that the worse affected with rain was the vegetables and also dented the cauliflower plants in the district.
