Shaheed Bhagat Singh's nephew to join environment lovers in 'Save Ganga' campaign

CHANDIGARH: Dr.Jagmohan Singh nephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh will join group of environment lovers from Punjab in save Ganga' campaign. The group led by renowned environment activist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal would leave for Uttrakhand on June 21.



Sant Seechewal, who volunteered to clean 'Kaali Vein' rivulet in Punjab said on Friday that the environmentalists from Punjab would go to Uttrakhand in support of Dr.G.D.Aggarwal who is sitting on fast unto death since June 13 in protest against construction of dam on the Ganga river. He said that dam would pose a serious threat to the environment in that region. He said that Uttrakhand government was selling natural resources to private company which has planned a dam on the Ganga. He said that it would be disaster for both Ganga and Bhagirithi rivers. He said that after dam in constructed, the water would not flow in Ganga round the year and it will be biggest threat to environment and population settled on banks of Ganga.

Dr.Jagmohan Singh who is based in Ludhiana is son of real sister of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. He told The Pioneer that he was upset that environment was on last of the agenda of respective governments. He said that he was impressed by pro-environment movement started in Punjab by Sant Seechewal and is keen to contribute for the state and country by way of providing clean environment. He said that he was not against construction of dam but wanted state government to study the effects on environment from dam.

Sant Seechwal warned the Uttrakhand government against playing with the environment. He said that beside Dr.Jagmohan Singh Dr.Umendra Dutt head of Kheti Virasat Mission would join the group of environment lovers from from Punjab who will join Dr.Aggarwal in peaceful protest.

Meanwhile, Sant Seechewal expressed concern that Punjab government was also ignoring environment related issues. He rued  that he had taken up the project to clean the historical Kali Vein' rivulet associated with Guru Nanak Dev ji but state government was not extending any help in this matter. He said that Kali Vein that begins from Mukerian in Hoshiarpur district passes through Kapurthala and Ferozepur districts. He said that waste discharge of about 100 villages was thrown in this rivulet. With the efforts of local volunteers ponds in about 31 villages have been recharged and waste water is being charged in them. He said in about 21 villages there are no ponds. He said that industrial and domestic discharge of towns like Dasuya, Tanda, Bholath and Begowal was being thrown in the Kali vein. It was the duty of state government to provide funds for water treatment plants in these towns,he added.
