AMRITSAR:  Shriomani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President here Thursday  in a letter to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Ambassador to United States of America Chanakayapuri, New Delhi has expressed deep concern over the cut off of hairs of Sikh girl in New York.

SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar said in a letter,” It is quite unfortunate that attacks on Sikh identity are continuing in different corners of the world. Despite the best efforts of our Missions abroad and Sikh diasporas to bring about an awareness among the world-community that Kirpan (small sword), hair and turban are among the essentials of Sikh faith, some fringe-elements in the world are very much reluctant to respect the significance of Sikh symbols. Such incidents may disturb balance of the world”.

Letter further stated, “As sufficient explained by the section of media, the braided hairs of Sikh girl student in a New-York school were cut-off; and Sikh driver was arrested for wearing a kirpan. Such things are not supposed to happen in today’s modern world, especially in the well informed society of the West”.

SGPC further through letter requested that Government of U.S.A may kindly be approached to take serious view of such communally-sensitive incidents and to bring about sufficient awareness among all authorities in U.S.A about the Sikh symbols.
