AMRITSAR: Dr. Tarsem Singh Gill, who has been appointed as Dean of Faculty of Sciences of the Guru Nanak Dev University, is a Doctorate in theoretical plasma physics from IIT, Delhi and currently he is a senior Professor of Physics.
He started his research career at IIT, Kanpur in July 1976 and completed his Ph.D. in 1981 from IIT, Delhi. He joined the Guru Nanak Dev University as a Lecturer in 1984. He had worked on problems of Laser-Plasma interaction, a topic relevant to laser fusion. Controlled nuclear fusion holds the key to energy problems of future generation and laser fusion is an advanced concept to achieve this goal. His current interests are also in Magnetospheric and Ionospheric plasmas which has relevance to Sun-Earth connection. He was convener of 14th National Symposium on Plasma Science & Technology, held in Punjab in December 1999. He has presented research papers at more than thirty National and International conferences and remained Vice-President of Plasma Science Society of India (PSSI) during 2004-2006. He has published extensively in international journals of repute like Physical Review, Physics of Plasmas, Physics Letters and Journal of Plasma Physics etc. He is on panel of peer reviewers of Physics of Plasmas, J. Plasma Physics and Physics Letters A. Several of his Ph.D students are academically well settled in India and abroad. Currently six students are working for their Ph.D degree under his supervision. He has been appointed as Dean, Faculty of Sciences for a period of two years w.e.f. July 1 to June 30, 2010. |
