AMBALA: “ SGPC is the supreme institution of Sikhs. No political interference can breach the faith in the highest institution of Sikh living in any part of the world”, said president SGPC, Avtar Singh Makkar here Friday.

He was speaking to newsmen in Ambala at the residence of senior Akali Dal leader Avtar Singh Takkar. He said that congress government would not be allowed to intervene in the internal matters of Sikh religion. He said that a handful of persons were adopting treacherous attitude on the behest of the congress government for their own vested interests.

When asked that the proposed Haryana SGPC has demanded from the government to seal the adjoining borders of Punjab, he said that it was not the first time that they would be facing such situation. This kind of attempt was already made in the past during Bansi Lal regime, he added. He asserted that Sikhs were well aware of the challenges those could come in their way to Karnal on August 30.

When asked if the proposed SGPC committee issue would be brought in the Vidhan Sabha and gets passed on the floor of state assembly, he reacted that politicizing of the religious matter of the Sikhs would not at all be tolerated otherwise government would be held responsible for the consequences.

Answering to a question he said that no one could dare to grab gurudwaras, these statements were made just to hype the issue. Citing a paradigm from the Sikh history he said that Mugal rulers made several efforts to harm Sikhs and Sikh school of thought but they had to face defeat. He stressed that Sikh religion was established to safeguard the rights of the poor, deprived and victimized without discriminating on the grounds of caste, creed and religion and serve humanity at large.

Commenting on the Delhi Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee he said that he had no personal conflict with the president of Delhi Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, Paramjit Singh Sarna. He had been pointing out the working of the committee, which he asserted was not satisfactory. Adding further, he claimed that it was erroneous to use the ‘Golak’ money for the publicity of the political leaders. He claimed that a school was built under the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management committee in Delhi for the children of victims of 1984 riots but the fees of the deserving students was not waived-off.

Answering to a question of Dera issue he said that he was also a Sikh soldier like any other Sikh who was loyal to the ‘panth’ and all of us were bound to the decision of Akat Takht.
