NAWANSHEHAR: Upkar coordination Society, a local NGO engaged in fighting the social evils like female foeticide and drugs, Saturday launched five vehicles, one for each block of the district, as part of its awareness programme.

Each of these vehicles has been equipped with loudspeakers and literature etc. for creating awakening among the masses against these evils. DC Nilkanth Avhad flagged off these vehicles from SDM office here this morning. DC who was accompanied by his wife Prajikta Nilkanth on the occasion, stressed on the need of constant campaigning for changing the mindset of the people on issues like foeticide. Earlier, a rally was taken out in the town by Upkar activists. Noted social activist Baba Naubat Rai led the march. (Photo: ht-sep20-1)

Meanwhile, prominent personalities of the town including industrialists, social activists, municipal councillors etc have joined hands and formed a society named "Nawanshahr Environment Society" to take up issues concerning environment. According to a release by secretary G.S.Toor here today, the Society has started functioning earnestly. Toor said construction of bathrooms near the SSP office here, expected to be completed by December, is the first project that has been initiated by the Society.

The other projects include creating parking slots in the town, controlling noise pollution, removing traffic bottlenecks and ensuring cleanliness, said Toor who urged the people of the district to observe a "pollution free Diwali" this year by shunning crackers. Noted industrialist Hardev Singh Kahma is the Chief Patron while Dr Kabul Singh has been elected as the Patron, said the release.
