Dharamshala: The department of health of the central Tibetan administration has issued an announcement on Saturday asking Tibetans to exercise caution against the use of contaminated milk product made in China, which had reportedly sickened thousands of infants with acute kidney complications.

The department sent health advisories to the representatives of the Tibetan settlements, heads of Tibetan schools and officials of health care centers.

It called for concerted effort from school administrations, parents and teachers in preventing children from consuming confectionaries made in China.

It advised Tibetans living in Tibet to keep themselves vigilant of the health hazards caused by the toxic milk products that are available at stores across Tibet. They are also cautioned to stop buying and selling milk products.

China's official news agency Xinhua reported that China dairy giant Sanlu Group apologized to the public for its contaminated milk powder laced with toxic chemical, 'melamine'. The company declared to recall all the infant milk powder produced prior to 6 August.

So far, the toxic milk product had caused 4 infant deaths and sickened more than 5000.
