NAWANSHAHR: Eye donation association, Nawanshahr which came into existence only three years back has succeeded in getting 100 donations during this period.

Baljit Kaur of Kangna bet was the 100th donor on January 6 while first donor too was a woman from Bheen. Association's general secretary Charanjit Singh Bheen said their organisation had been successful in getting the eyes of 10 year old girl and also that of a nonagenarian of 115 years.

Bheen is also grateful to Punjab minister Tikshan Sood for registering the Punarjot eye bank society of Ludhiana run by Dr Ramesh for transplanting eyes received from the donors onto the needy. Bheen revealed that under a new process launched this year, the persons below the age of 50 year on whom the donated eyes are transplanted, would be required to pay a single penny as cost for the operation. He said that nearly 2600 persons had pledged their eyes with the association so far. Bheen however laments that the state's contribution at the national level in the field of eye donation last year was just two percent. The association would soon organise a programme to honour the families of its donors, revealed Bheen.
