CHANDIGARH: Punjab has got a distinction of having as many as eight Director General of Police (DGP)  and 10 Additinal DGP's at one time in its police force, perhaps the only state in the country to have such heavy top.

The Departmental Promotion Committee(DPC) on Thursday cleared the names of 12 IPS officers for promotion including five ADGP's and four officers( 1982 batch),  Inspector Generals of Police to the rank of  ADGP while three officers of SSP rank are promoted as DIG.

The five ADGP rank officers who have got clearance for promotion to the rank of DGP are 1975 batch IPS officer Anil Kaushik, ADGP (Security), Shashi Kant ADGP(law and order) from 1977 batch. Though these two officers would be posted in DGP immediately, thre three other officers of 1977 batch-Chander Shekhar, JP Birdi and Jyoti Trehan-all ADGP- has to wait for vacancies.

Punjab police already has five officers in DGP rank including DGP N.P.S.Aulakh, K.K.Attri, Mohammed Izhar Alam, A.P.Pandey and R.S.Gill. The government reporteldy is also keen to bring another officer of J and K cadre of DGP rank-A.S.Gill- younger brother of R.S.Gill on deputation to Punjab. The name of N.P.S.Aulakh in the meantime ahs been forwarded for central deputation.

The four IPS officers of 1982 batch cleared for promotion as ADGP are Sanjeev Gupta,  Vigilance chief Sumedh Singh Saini, IGP intelligence Suresh Arora and Rajinder Singh.

There has been tussle for promotion between the 1982 batch IPS officers in the state after the SAD-BJP government took over. IG Rajinder Singh moved Punjab and Haryana high court claiming the government was proposing to promote his batchmates even though there were four vacancies. Rajinder Singh was suspended soon after he filed the case following allegations by the management of an engineering college on the city’s periphery. He was recetnly reinstated after he withdrew his petition from High Court.

Rajinder Singh  though has been promoted but he will have to wait till April 1 to get the slot of ADGP till the retirement of Director General of Police (DGP) - Prisons Mohammad Izhar Alam.

The DPC has also cleared the names of four IPS officers SSP Patiala S.K.Asthana, SSP Ropar R.N. Dhoke and Shashi Prabha Diweidi to the rank of DIG.
