PATIALA: SAD general secretary Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra on Monday criticized central food minister Sharad Pawar for his statement in which he brushed aside fears of a major crisis, saying that though the monsoon was delayed by about 12 days, there is "no drought-like situation".
Addressing a press conference Chandumajra said that in Punjab it was like ‘Drought’ and Sharad Pawar has been gauging drought in India by using different yardsticks.
He said that Pawar has been looking his own state where Monsoon was active but in Punjab every farmers has been depending on tube well irrigation. The tube well irrigation was not adequate for Punjab like state as it has been providing plenty food to whole the country, he added.
Chandumajra however demanded 50 percent subsidy on diesel consumption which was used by Punjab farmers to run tube wells fro the irrigation purposes. He revealed that over 50 percents of tube well has been running on diesel engines due to power shortage.
Chandumajra demanded that drought in Punjab and northern states should be declared as National Calamity and special package should be given to Punjab farmers.
He also criticized Punjab congress leaders for not playing any constructing role in the hour of crises.
