CHANDIGARH: Manoranjan Kalia, Local Government, Industries & Commerce Minister Punjab disclosed here today that in order to reduce traffic congestion and to ensure direct access of public to Golden Temple, Punjab Government started construction of four lane Elevated Road in Amritsar.
The Elevated Road from Maqboolpura Chowk to Bhandari Bridge which was 3.25 Km in length and 17.20 mt. in width on signle peir. This elevated road would eventually be connected with the Elevated Road starting from Burj Baba Phulla Singh to chowk Phawara consisting of two lanes with 0.9 km as its length. The total cost of this project was around 210 crore. Around 70 percent of the work on this project has been executed with 143 crore as expenditure till date.
Kalia further said that the Elevated Road from Maqboolpura Chowk to Bhandari Bridge was likely to be completed by 31st of October 2009 and the remaining work is likely to be completed by 31st of March 2010. This Elevated road constructed on signle peir with a width of 17.2 mt. would benefit large number of vehicles coming daily to visit the Holy City of Amritsar to pay homage to Golden Temple, Durgiana Mandir, Jallianwala Bagh and to see retreat at Wagah Border at evening (Flag hosting ceremony). This would invariably reduce traffic congestion as well.
Kalia said that this road was 3rd of its kind in India which was being constructed on a single peir of 3 meter width with 17.2 meter wide segments which are connected with High Tension Wires, without disturbing the existing Road Network. He said this project will be completed with the help of Government of India under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
