Gurgaon administration launches awareness campaign on Swine Flu

CHANDIGRH: Gurgaon administration Wednesday launched awareness and sensitization drive about the symptoms and precautionary measures for combating Swine-flu.



The Deputy Commissioner, Gurgaon, Rajender Kataria called a meeting of principals and Headmasters of all the government as well as private schools and colleges in the district to make them aware about the disease and the doctors of private hospitals also participated in it.

The meeting was organized in the meeting of Mini Secretariat. Presiding over the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner said that the district administration is alert about prevention of Swine-flu and added  that awareness is prevention. He said that the people need not to be under panic but they should know the symptoms and precautionary measures needed for prevention of the disease. According to Mr Kataria, though 34 positive cases of Swine-flu have been reported in Gurgaon but no causality had taken place due to the disease. He said that the schools and colleges need not to be closed because of Swine-flu scare, instead, the affected student can proceed on a weeks leave and stay secluded at home.

He told that a collection centre has been opened only in General hospital of Gurgaon for collecting samples of Swine-flu suspected cases and no other hospital in the district has such center. Mr Kataria told that the samples were sent to the NICD lab at Delhi for testing and no other laboratory in the district had the facility of conducting such test. He told that due to Swine-flu scare, 258 samples were collected during the past two days in Gurgaon, out of these report of 131 has been received and report of 127 was pending. 34 positive cases were detected among these samples but no death has been reported till now. He said that the situation in the district was under control.

Kataria asked the parents and the doctors of private hospitals to refer the suspected cases to the General Hospital on finding symptoms of Swine-flu after screening and proper examining the patient. He said that the patients with common cold, cough and other flu rushed for Swine-flu checkup causing unnecessary crowd at the collection center which becomes a cause for delay in receiving reports of the sample testing. It was told that the NICD lab had a capacity of testing only 160 samples per day.

Kataria said that today’s meeting was a part of first phase of sensitization drive and after this, meetings in small groups would be organized for bringing awareness about Swine-flu among the masses like Aaganwari workers. He said that for spreading awareness, the use of publicity vehicles of Information and Public Relations Department, Haryana would also be made. He told that the administration has written to the MNCs to avoid foreign touring during these days.

He told that after implementation of Epidemic Act in the state, it has become mandatory for the private hospitals to report the suspected Swine-flu cases to the Civil Surgeon office.  Under the Act, even the samples can be taken forcibly if a suspected patient refuses to give samples. He told that helpline for Swine-flu has been started in Gurgaon and any person can just dial and seek information or inform about the suspected case. The Civil Surgeon Dr SS Dalal told that Swine-flu is not fatal disease and its virus was so weak that we can easily acquire immunity against it. He told that the medicine Temiflu required for treating Swine-flu cases was available in enough quantity in the district. A presentation was given by Dr Vishesh who told that the symptoms of Swine-flu are cough, sore throat, running and stuffy nose, bodyache, headache, fatique, chills, difficulty in respiration and vomiting. He told that as a precautionary measure, the people should wash their hands time and again with soap and observe good respiratory habits like putting cloth or hanky while sneezing or coughing.
