SANGRUR: More than 1000 girls will compete in the Punjab State Rural Games to be held at the War Heroes Stadium here from November 16 to 18.
Seventy-four girls from each district are expected to take part in the the three-day competitions. The participants who are below 16 on December 31, 2006, are eligible to compete. According to Punjab Sports Director Pargat Singh disciplines included in the State Games being organised by the Punjab Sports Department are archery, kabaddi, kho-kho, weightlifting, volleyball, athletics and hockey. Competitions in the track and field are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 3000m, shot put, long jump, high jump, javelin and 4x100 metres relay. In archery, the distances are 30 metres and 40 metres. Weight categories in weightlifting are 48 kg, 53 kg, 58 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg and plus 75 kg. The Punjab probables for the forthcoming All India Rural Games will be selected during the state rural games. The All-India Rural Games (Group I) in archery, kho-kho and kabaddi will be held at Aurangabad from January 5 to 8 next year. The Group II All India Rural Games in volleyball, tug of war and football will be organised by at Aizwal (Mizoram) from December 12 to 15. The Group III All India Rural Games in athletics, hockey and wrestling will be held at Guwahati from January 4 to 7 next year. Sangrur Deputy Commissioner S L Ladhar will inaugurate the games on November 16 at 10 a.m while Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal will be chief guest on November 18 and she will also distribute the prizes.
