AMRITSAR: The Sikh Youth of Punjab (SYP) began its enrolment drive for primary membership of the party. Gurpreet Singh Mann newly elected president formally launched the membership drive in Punjab after presiding over the meeting of the new office bearers.

The members of the interim committee of the body met today for two hours to discuss the situation arisen in the wake of SGPC amending the Nanakshahi calendar unilaterally.

At a press conference Sardar Mann declared his parties aim to empower and harness youth power for the welfare of the Sikh people. Stressing that the communities future lay with young Sikhs, he said their thrust would be to groom new faces and bring forth talented youth through this platform which was not possible in the youth wings of the existing political parties that are plagued with nepotism and corruption.

Contrary to the claims of SGPC chief that the changes in the Nanakshahi calendar would unite the Sikhs, the SYP leader said it had further created division in the community. Taking SGPC head Avtar Singh Makkar to task for befooling the Sikhs by claiming that "there was no tampering with calendar", he said the executive committee of the SGPC has altered the character and spirit of the calendar.

Others who were present include Prabhjot Singh, Saravkar Singh, Noblejeet Singh, Tarjinder singh as general secretary, vice-president, spokesperson and joint secretary respectively.

District presidents and separate panels will also be constituted next month to steer the working of the party in different fields, he said
