PATIALA: Representatives of different sections of society paid glowing tributes to retired Principal S.P. Chopra, on his bhog ceremony at Tyagi Mandir here yesterday. Chopra, who retired as principal after about four decades of meritorious service in Punjab government education department, died at the age of 85.
Prominent among those present on the occasion included Brahm Mohindra, sitting Congress legislator from Samana, Hardial Kamboj, former Administrative Member of Punjab State Electricity Board, Ved Parkash Gupta, former chairman of Pepsu Road Transport Corporation, senior Congress leaders Harchand Singh Barsat, Ajay Thapar, and Dr Darshan Singh Ghuman. Dr Navin Saronwala, Dr Sukhdip Boparai, both prominent eye surgeons, and Dr Sudhir Verma, of the Sadbhavna Hospital, recalled S. P. Chopra’s services to the society.
Born and brought up in Patiala, S. P. Chopra was a graduate of the Government Mohindra College here from where he did his BA in 1949. He joined the education department starting his career from the Government High School in Narwana, now in Haryana. He did his masters in history besides BT.
His wife Krishna Chopra, who expired about 15 years back, had also worked in the education department of Punjab from where she retired as headmistress.
Chopra retired from Punjab government service in 1984 from Government School, Dirba. One of his sons-in-law is Yogindra Mohan, a veteran journalist, who retired from the Indian Express after working there for about 30 years.
