CHANDIGARH: A delegation of eminent writers, under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal President Shriromani Akali Dal, along with Dr Upinderjit Kaur Education and Languages Minister Punjab, will submit a memorandum to Shivraj Patil Administrator of UT Chandigarh and Governor of Punjab for implementation of Punjabi as an official language of UT Chandigarh.

Disclosing this here today, Balbir Kaur, Director Languages Department Punjab said that deputation has demanded to make it compulsory in all its education institutions up to matriculation standard.

She said that all noted writers and journalists, who are members of the Punjab State Language Board, would assemble at Punjab Bhawan on March 16 at 4.00 PM and proceed as a Punjabi Caravan to Punjab Raj Bhawan to submit a resolution demanding proper use of Punjabi in all the Offices, Boards, Corporations, educational institutes and Subordinate Courts in the territory of Chandigarh and making it compulsory subject in all the schools.

She further said that the Chandigarh city was setup on 30,000 acre land belonging to 28 villages of Punjab after displacing its large population. But after reorganization of Punjab and Haryana states, the status of 'City Beautiful' was changed as Union Territory and declared it as a joint capital of both the states. Being the original Punjabi mother land, its official language must be a Punjabi language, she remarked.
