According to the spokesperson of the Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society more such facility camps would be organized in Chandigarh and several parts of Punjab in coming months. This was the part of the ‘Roko Cancer’ campaign of the Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society.

Free mammography camps were organized from 22-26 March in Janta Labour Colony Sector 25, Manimajra, Naya Gaon and Dhanna Bhagat Gurudwara near Y.P.S. Public School Phase-8, Mohali and Sahayta Cancer Kendra in Sector 15-B.

India’s first fully equipped mobile breast cancer detection unit run by U.K. based MKC Trust is employed to educate women and help them with early detection and eradication of breast cancer. ‘Roko Cancer’ campaign is turning into a movement in the border areas of Punjab. The disease claims over 50,000 lives in India each year. Breast Cancer remains leading cause of death in the developed world. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, an organization established by the World Health Organization estimates that an approximately 80,000 women in India are affected by breast cancer each year, other estimates place the number of cases of breast cancer in India to about 10,00,000 women each year. There will be approximately 2,50,000 new cases of breast cancer in India by 2015. The Indian Council of Medical Research is of the view that breast cancer has overtaken cervical cancer to become the leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women living in Metropolitan cities.

The target of the camp is the rural and semi-urban women who need to be told that if detected early, cancer is curable. More than 50 percent of patients are diagnosed with breast cancer in an advanced stage of the diseases leading to avoidable high mortality. Roko Cancer is working with the Government of Punjab and is spreading the campaign in five districts in the Malwa belt.

On concluding day of the camp sponsored by Sahyata Cancer Sahyog, Roko Cancer performed a large number of mammograms. Examination was done by female attendants. Additional information was given on self-examination.
