Surjit Academy face Sangrur HA in Hockey league final Print E-mail

LUDHIANA: Surjit Hockey Academy of Jalandhar will cross swords with Sangrur Hockey Academy in the final of the Western Union Punjab Hockey League for Under-16 being conducted by the Punjab Sports Department at the Punjab Agricultural University Astroturf Stadium here tomorrow.

 

Surjit Hockey Academy got the better of plucky Punjab Agricultural University Hockey Academy of Ludhiana by 3-1 after leading 2-1 at half time and Sangrur Hockey Academy snuffed out the challenge of Ranjit Hockey Academy of Amritsar by 4-1 after sharing two goals in the first session in the semi-finals played today.

Surjit Hockey Academy and PAU Academy were evenly matched. However, Surjit Hockey Academy capitalized most of the chances which came their way. PAU were awarded eight penalty corners but they could convert only one, their second in the 10 th minute. Surjit Hockey Academy forced penalty corners in the seventh, 13th, 14th, 33rd and 40th minutes. However, these chances went abegging.

It was PAU which fired the first salvo to take lead in the 10th minute when Tajbir converted a penalty corner. Surjit Hockey Academy hit back with vengeance and two minutes later they restored parity after Satbir Singh scored a field goal. Encouraged with the success, Surjit Hockey Academy mounted relentless pressure and Manjinder Singh scored field goals in the 24 th and 33rd minutes to engineer his team's triumph in the semi-final contest.

Trailing by one goal, Sangrur Hockey Academy staged a smart rally to down Ranjit Hockey Academy whom they beat by 4-1 in the second semi-final fixture. At half time the teams shared two goals. However, the second half mostly belonged to Sangrur Hockey Academy .

Ranjit Academy shot into the lead in the seventh minute through a field goal scored by Satinder Singh. Five minutes later, Sangrur Academy players coordinated well and converted three penalty corners and scored one field goal to end the challenge of Ranjit Academy . Following their second penalty corner award in the 12 th minute, Sumitpal sounded the board with a thundering shot.

Amarpreet than held the spotlight by scoring two goals. He registered his first goal in the 43rd minute by converting a penalty corner, the fifth awarded to Sangrur. He converted another penalty corner, seventh one awarded in 57 th minute to round of the winners' tally.

In between, Sukhdeeep had scored a field goal to make it 3-1.
