Ajmer Singh Aulakh is a famous playwriter, renown artist and he is a winner of Sahitya Akadmi award. Aulakh dedicated his life to Theatre and his works mostly depicts the situations, issues and problems of a common man. He was at Kila Raipur sports festival and had a discussion with "Punjabnewsline.com".

 

Q. What is Theatre according to you?

A. Theatre is a medium which connects the artists directly with the people. It’s a campaign, through which we can aware the people, through which we can establish a direct contact with audience. It’s a platform through we can serve the people and work for the society.

Q. What should be the real motto of theatre?

A. The real motto of theatre should be highlighting those issues, situations and problems which a common man faces in his life. Theatre needs commitment and dedication. Theatre should be related with the people.

Q. What role is your “Lok Manch” played in Punjab ?

A. Our “Lok Manch” is successful to connect the village people with us. Now people eagerly wait for our performances and a large gathering occurs when we play something in villages. We have highlighted the problems of a common man. We create awareness about the issues prevailing in the society.

Q. What role has media played in enhancing the theatre in Punjab ?

A. Media has played an important role to popularize the Theatre in Punjab . With the help of print and electronic media theatre prospered in Punjab and it progressed a lot when the media popularize it in the whole state. These days, a lot of newspapers, magazines and television channels are there in Punjab and they give good coverage to Theatre.
 
Q. Can a artist, earn a lot of money through Theatre?

A. No, if an artist wishes to earn a lot then Theatre is not a destination for him. Theatre is a medium through we can work for the society. It’s not a medium to earn money.

Q. You could have gone to Cinema also but why you have chosen to remain in Theatre?

A. I want to work for my people. I want to be in touch with villages and its people. It’s a direct medium through I am connected with my audience. I feel satisfaction while working in theatre.

Q. Can Theatre contribute for the society?

A. Yes, if theatre done with commitment, dedication and ideology then it’s became a social service.  Any work done for the people can serve the society and Theatre is one of them.

Q. What about your views regarding female foeticide?

A.  It’s a very serious crime on the land of Guru Nanak Dev ji. Awareness regarding this crime should be spread in the educational institutions. Literature in favor of women should be introduced in the schools and colleges. Women should also come forward to eliminate this crime.
