KILA RAIPUR: Three-time Olympic gold medalist Balbir Singh Senior, Padamshree Pargat Singh,  son of hockey wizard Ashok Dhyanchand, Gill Surjeet ( song writer), K S Aulakh (Vice Chancellor – Punjab Agriculturral University), Olympian athlete Manjit Kaur, Prabhjot Singh ( Bureau Chief – The Tribune) were amongst those who were felicitated for their outstanding contributions, on the penultimate day of the 72nd Parle-G Kila Raipur Sports Festival, popularly known as Rural Olympics, at the Grewal Stadium here today.

 

Brig. Labh Singh, Dr. Ajmer Singh (athletics),  . Sajjan Cheema, . Kuldeep Singh, Suman Sharma (basketball), Balbir Singh (Railways),  Chand Singh, . Gundeep Kumar, Ramandeep Singh,  Hardeep Singh, . Arvind Chabra (hockey) and other top sports persons were present on the occasion.
A tough contest was witnessed in the long jump event for men where seasoned campaigner  Maha Singh  (Sangrur) leapt to a distance of  7.23 meters to win gold medal. Plucky Shamsher Pratap Singh (Jalandhar) gave Maha Singh a tough fighting before settling for silver with a leap of 7.21 metres. Bhupinder Singh (Patiala)  finished third with 6.78 metres.
Anupama Shrivastva  of  Hoshiarpur won the gold medal in 800 meters race for women.Gurjit Virk of Sunam and Manpreet Bal of Jalandhar got silver and bronze, respectively.
Vishal Saxena of Patiala Railways was declared the fastest runner among men as he won the 100 metres race and pusing Saraj (Jalandhar) and Bhagwant Singh (Punjab Police) to second and third positions, respectively.
Jalandhar outserved and outspiked Mastuana Sahib by three sets to nil in the volleyball (shootingball) final for men.
Meanwhile, the packed stadium witnessed a number of astonishing feats human beaings. The bullcok cart races kept the spectators spell-bound. Heats in pre-quarter-final races were conducted today.
