DIGBOI: Ashok Kumar of Delhi carded a 14-under-par, 274 to win the Rs. 20 Lakh IndianOil XtraPremium Masters at the Digboi Golf Course here today.
He was unstoppable as he picked up back-to-back birdies on the fifth hole he holed a 15-foot putt and the sixth hole where he hit his ball to just two-feet from the pin, to make the turn at two-under-par, 34. He received a cheque of Rs.3,24,000. He continued to hole short putts for birdie on the 11th, 13th and 14th holes to get to five-under-par for the day before making a double bogey on the par-five 15 th hole where he hit his four-iron off the tee into the left bushes. He chipped out only to hit his next shot into the bushes on the right and was five on the green and two-putted for the only double bogey of the day. However a birdie on the 16 th, an unnecessary bogey on the 17th where he hit his second shot over the green and missed chip and putt for par and a final birdie on the par-four 18th hole, saw Ashok card a four-under-par, 68 and seal his 11 th victory on the domestic tour. Shamim Khan finished tied second, alongwith promising youngster Vikrant Chopra at eight-under-par, 280. Vikrant Chopra carded his best finish on the domestic professional circuit today. However, he had his work cut out for him as he started the day with a double bogey on the first where he duffed his chip into the greenside bunker. He picked up a birdie on the third, bogeyed the fourth but bounced back with birdies on the fifth and sixth holes. Another bogey on the ninth, saw him make the turn at one-over-par, 37. But Vikrant made no mistakes on the back nine, making birdies on the 11 th, 12th and 16th holes to finish the day with a two-under-par, 70 taking his total to eight-under-par. Yusuf Ali carded a three-under-par, 69 in the final round to finish sole fourth at 281, while Shankar Das was fifth with his total of 283. Bangalore's golfing stars, C Muniyapa and S Madaiah finished tied sixth at four-under-par for the week. Tournament favourite Vijay Kumar was a further storke behind and finished tied eighth alongwith Delhi's Vinod Kumar with an identical three-under-par, 285. Meanwhile, Ajay Barua won the amateur prize. He carded a four-over-par, 76 today taking his total to 301.
