Satinder Bains

Saturday, 24 February 2007

FATEHGARH SAHIB: A non-resident Indian (NRI) Daljeet Singh Bawa, who is Engineer by profession has granted annual scholarships to four students of MBA and MCA amounting to Rs 25,000 studying in  Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib to encourage the outstanding students.

Bawa , a resident of Vancouver(Canada)  has been serving in a company which is manufacturing environment friendly alternative fuel.

During his visit to the college, Bawa , a noted fuel cell technology expert offered his services for any project on environment from students of the college. He also planted sapling in the college campus.  Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib principal Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia thanked the NRI for granting scholarships to the students.  Former SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar, who was also present on the occasion  appreciated  Bawa’s gesture towards  the college
students.

In his address to student, Bawa said that alternative fuel is the need of the hour to save environment. He said that hydrogen fuel cell technology was a great achievement in this direction in which power was produced by using hydrogen in the fuel cells which further produce electricity to run the motor of the vehicle. He said that many automobile companies had launched a large number of vehicles in the market which were being run on battery.

Talking about the difference between battery operated vehicles and fuel cell based vehicles, Bawa said that battery had limited life and capacity to run a vehicle then the vehicle require a new battery but in fuel cell based vehicles, the hydrogen continuously produce power to the run the motor of the vehicle. He further said that the fuel cell based motors were able to exploit the maximum strength of the fuel while in petrol and diesel run vehicles, only 40 to 45 percent efficiency could be attained. He said that in the fuel cell technology, the fuel efficiency would be almost double. He admitted that at present this technique was costly but by 2025 the running cost of the fuel cell based vehicle would be almost at the rate of petrol and diesel based vehicles. He said it would be the time when automobile industry and petroleum sector will adopt this technology at commercial level.

Bawa disclosed that the fuel cell based vehicles produced zero noise and zero pollution so it was becoming the first preference in many countries and the governments of these countries were investing huge amount of money to for further research and development of the fuel cell technology.

Gurmohan Singh Walia, said that pollution was the major problem in the world. He said that global warming was changing the geographical scenario of the world. He said that encouraging the fuel cell technology was the need of the hour. Dr Walia said that many steps were being taken to create awareness among the public especially in students.
