ROPAR: Ropar district witnessed mixed results on the three assembly seats, results of which were declared today. Congress, Akali Dal (B) and independent candidates bagged one seat each in the district.
The Akali Dal (B) candidate Sant Ajit Singh won the Anandpur Sahib seat defeating his nearest rival and sitting congress MLA Ramesh Dutt Sharma by a margin of 9,898 votes. Out of the total 1,01435 votes polled in the constituency Sant Ajit Singh was polled 47,810 while Ramesh Dutt Sharma got 37,912 votes. The rebel congress candidate Amarjit Singh Saini came third with 5,666 votes. In Nangal constituency Congress Candidate Rana K.P.Singh retained the seat by defeating BJP stalwart and former minister Madan Mohan Mittal by a margin of 2,676 votes in a close contest. Out of the total 91,172 votes polled in the constituency Rana K.P.Singh got 42,474 votes while Mittal was polled 39,798 votes. Gurdial Singh Dher of CPI (M) came third with 4,608 votes. The Chamkaur Sahib (reserve) seat witnessed a major upset when rebel congress candidate Charanjit Singh Channi, contesting the election as an independent, succeeded in breaking the traditional strong hold of the Akali Dal by defeating the four times Akali Dal MLA Satwant Kaur Sandhu by a margin of just 1,758 votes in another close contest. Out of the total 90,353 votes polled in the constituency, Channi was polled 37,946 votes while Satwant Kaur Sandhu was polled 36,188 votes. The Congress candidate Manmohan Singh came poor third with 10,227 votes and lost his deposite. Meanwhile, the winning candidates took out victory processions today after the announcement of results today. |
