SAD-BJP sweeps in Nawanshehar Print E-mail

Jatinder Singh KarihaNAWANSHEHAR: By winning all the three seats, the SAD-BJP combine made a clean sweep in the district here Tuesday. Chaudhary Nand Lal of SAD in Balachaur committed a hat trick when he won the seat third time in a row.

Lal polled 41206 votes and defeated his nearest rival Santosh Kataria of Congress by a margin of 1101 votes. Hargopal of BSP, the third main contestant, could poll only 6610 votes. A total of 95651 voters had cast their votes in the constituency.

In Nawanshahr constituency, SAD-BJP nominee Jatinder Singh Kariha defeated his nearest rival Parkash Singh, the sitting MLA, with a margin of 5813 votes. Kariha polled 46172 votes while Singh polled 40357 votes. As many as 109631 voters had exercised their franchise during the poll here. The BSP suffered a set back as its nominee Vinod Kumar Seeta could poll only 17970 votes. Last time the party had polled around 28,000 votes.

In Banga (reserve), Mohan Lal of SAD who polled 35773 votes as compared to 33334 polled (margin of 2439 votes) by his nearest rival Tarlochan Singh Soond of Congress, was declared the winner. Here too the BSP which was considered to have a strong base in the area came third. Its nominee Parveen Kumar could manage only 12342 of the total 86379 votes polled during the poll. A total of 29 contestants including independents had contested the poll in the district here.
