AMRITSAR: The SAD-BJP combine managed to corner eight seats while the Congress had to content itself with just two out of the 10 Assembly segments in the results declared here on Tuesday.
Interestingly, the Congress managed to win the traditional Akali seat of Rajasansi while the SAD won the urban seat of Amritsar (South). Parkash Singh Badal led SAD won six seats while the BJP claimed two urban seats out of the allotted three tickets. SAD's nominee from Amritsar (South), Raminder Singh Bolaria, secured the highest victory lead in the district. He defeated rival Congress leader Harjinder Singh Thekedar by 24,008 votes. Bikram Singh Majithia was the other Akali leader to secure a high lead of 23,008 votes. He slugged out the Congress contestant, Sukhjinder Raj Singh Lali, who got 28,682 votes. In a perceptible development, owing to the presence of a rebel SAD candidate in the fray, Congress candidate from Rajasansi, Sukhjinder Singh Sukhsarkaria, won the seat by 8,276 votes while senior Akali leader Vir Singh Lopoke had to bite dust. Akali rebel Raghbir Singh Rajasansi took away 3,582 votes. Dalbir Singh of SAD emerged victorious from Verka with 67,699 votes while his rival Congress leader, Raj Kumar Verka, former Parliamentary secretary, had to be content with 49,602 votes. Following a of snag in an EVM, the decision on 348 votes could not be arrived at. Excise and Taxation Minister Sardul Singh lost to Malkiat Singh by 12,444 votes. Anil Joshi, a close confidant of Navjot Sidhu, gave a drubbing to sitting Congress MLA, Jugal Kishore Sharma. Joshi secured 33,397 votes while Sharma secured 19,302 votes. Congress rebel, Yoginder Pal Dhingra took away 16,768 votes. Om Prakash Soni of the Congress won by a margin of 13,130 votes. He gave a drubbing to BJP contestant Raj Mohinder Singh Chhina, who managed 47,839 votes. Lakshmi Kanta Chawla, the State BJP vice president won with a margin of 3,705 votes while Darbari Lal, the State Assembly Speaker, got 15,161 votes. Congress rebel, Arun Kumar Mehra, secured 10,217 votes. SAD's Amarpal Singh Bonny, son of Rattan Singh Ajnala (MP) won the Ajnala seat with 56,560 votes. His nearest rival, Congress candidate, Harpratap Singh Ajnala, took 46,359 votes. Akali rebel Harinder Singh Randhawa grabbed 5,178 votes. The border constituency of Attari has sent Guljar Singh Ranike to the assembly with 43,235 votes while Congress nominee Rattan Singh had to be content with 24,163 votes.
