FATEHGARH SAHIB: Shamsher Singh Dullo, Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president, who suffered defeat at the hands of young SAD candidate Bikramjit Singh Khalsa from Khanna reserve constituency has seen many ups and downs in his long political career. But this is the worst for him and the party.
But his defeat from his hoe turf Khanna is life long shock. He has contested five times from this Assembly polls. His wife, Harbans Kaur Dullo, had also once contested from the same constituency and won the election whereas Dullo had won twice and lost thrice from here. Harbans Kaur Dullo secured 48.27 per cent votes and defeated SAD (B) candidate Satwinder Kaur Dhaliwal, who polled 37.08 pc votes, in 2002 Assembly elections. In 1977, Bachan Singh Cheema of SAD(B) defeated Shamsher Singh Dullo by securing 27.95 pc votes in comparison to 26.95 per cent votes polled by Dullo. However, Shamsher Singh Dullo won in 1980 by securing 50.94 per cent votes by defeating CPI candidate Amar Singh who secured 44.88 per cent votes. SAD candidate Bachan Singh got 1.15 per cent votes only in that election as the party supported CPI candidate Amar Singh in that election. In 1985, Sukhdev Singh Libra of SAD(B) defeated Shamsher Singh Dullo by securing 42.72 per cent votes against Dullo's 40.45 per cent. Dullo won from this constituency in 1992 by defeating BJP candidate Mohinder Pal Jassal. He bagged 70.65 pc votes as compared to his opponent who got 11.96 per cent votes. However, it is worth mentioning here that Akalis had boycotted that election. In 1997, Bachan Singh Cheema of the SAD (B) defeated Dullo by securing 50.54 per cent votes against Dullo's score of 36.25 per cent. In 2004, Shamsher Singh Dullo also tried his luck in Lok Sabha elections from Ropar reserved constituency. But Sukhdev Singh Libra of the SAD secured 43.99 per cent votes then and defeated Shamsher Singh Dullo who could only garner 39.73 per cent votes. However, in 1999, Shamsher Singh Dullo had his sweet revenge when he defeated SAD candidate Satwinder Kaur Dhaliwal by securing 45.92 per cent votes. His rival could only collect 35.05 per cent votes. In his long political career, Shamsher Singh Dullo has held various political offices. He was vice-president of Municipal Committee, Khanna, from 1972-73 and in 1975. |
