Parkash Singh BadalCHANDIGARH: Parkash Singh Badal president of Shiromani Akali Dal would on Friday swear in Chief Minister of Punjab for the fourth term which is a record and may remain unbeatable for the times to come.

 

Badal along with members of cabinet would take oath at a ceremony being held in Cricket Stadium at Mohali. It is expected that nine SAD and six BJP MLA's would be inducted into the cabinet.

The star studded swearing-in-ceremony would be attended by Chief Ministers of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Bihar beside top leadership of BJP including L.K.Advani and Arun Jaitely. Former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujaral and former J and K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and large number of other political leaders would be present to watch the ceremony.

According to SAD sources those who have are expected to join the council of ministers are Captain Kanwaljit Singh, Nirmal Singh Kahlon, Sucha Singh Langah, Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, Hira Singh Gabria, Manpreet Singh Badal, Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Mohinder Kaur Josh, Harish Rai Dhanda from SAD side and from BJP side Manoranjan Kalia, Sat Pal Gosain, Mater Mohan Lal, Tikshan Sood, Swaran Ram and Raj Khurana.

It is reported that post of Speaker would be kept by SAD and deputy speaker's post would be given to BJP. It is learnt that BJP wanted to induct seven ministers but only six are expected in the first batch.

The SAD-BJP combine has won 67 seats out of 116. SAD has strength of 48 and BJP 19 in the house of 117 members. Election on one seat of Beas is to be held on March 11. The Congress party has won 44 seats. Three of five independents who won the election have also extended supported SAD-BJP alliance.

The SAD has made arrangements to transport its supporters from all over the state for the swearing-in-ceremony. It is expected that more than 10,000 people would attend the oath ceremony beside senior political leaders of both the parties, judges of Punjab and Haryana High Court, senior civil and police officers.

Soon after Badal swears as Chief Minister, he would address a press conference in the main Punjab secretariat. The appointments of Chief Secretary and Principal secretary to Chief Minister were also expected tomorrow. A major reshuffle in the civil and police administration is also on the cards.

Badal had earlier remained Chief Minister of Punajb three times. Born in the village of Abul Khurana in 08-12-1927, he entered politics in 1947 and was first elected to Punjab Vidhan Sabha in 1957. He remained Chief Minister of Punjab on three different occasions i.e. from 27-03-1970 to 14-06-1971,20-06-1977 to 17-02-1980 and Feb. 1997 to Feb. 2002.

Also he has been a Member of Parliament and became Union Minster of Agriculture and Irrigation in the Government headed by Late Sh. Morarji Desai. Badal has remained Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha in 1972, 1980. Presently he holds the position of Leader of Opposition in 12th Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 2002.

He was detained in Karnal jail in connection with Civil Liberties Agitation, detained under MISA during Emergency and has been to jail several times for the cause of Punjab, Punjabis and Punjabiat including the Dharam Yudh Morcha. In total he has spent many years in jail as a political prisoner fighting for the fut ure of Punjab.

His son, Sukhbir Singh Badal, is presently a Member of Parliament and a former union minister. Sukhbir had handled the election campaign of his father. Badal's daughter Preneet Kaur is married to MLA Adesh Pratap Singh Kairon, scion of the Kairon family, who is the grandson of the legendary Pratap Singh Kairon and nephew of former chief minister and Governor Harcharan Singh Brar.
