CHANDIGARH: A day after two people were killed when a roof collapsed in the biggest vegetable market here, the local administration on Monday said it would carry out a survey of all the buildings in the city to check whether they have any structural problems.

"We will survey all buildings shortly to assess structural deficiencies. This process will be taken up as a campaign throughout the city" Chandigarh's Home Secretary Krishan Mohan, who visited the site this morning, said.

If any building or structure is found unsafe it would be got vacated to avoid tragedies like that which took place on Saturday, he said.

The two buildings adjoining to the site of the roof collapse site would be sealed and a proper survey of rest of the buildings in the area would be conducted to assess their safety, Mohan added.

A Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory(CFSL) team would also inspect the site, he said.

Though the administration has ordered an inquiry into the incident, Mohan indicated that one of the factors leading to the collapse of the roof of the shed could be drilling work carried out by the shop owners to install electrical fittings and telephones inside the pillars holding the roof.

"You can see that spaces have been created inside the pillars. The real picture would emerge after the inquiry, but it can be one of the reasons, though not conclusive," he said.
