CHANDIGARH: The four year long agitation of farmers of Barnala district in Punjab against Trident Group Saturday came to an end following Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal successfully clinched a comprehensive package of understanding with the farmers.
The farmers were agitting against forcible land acquisition by former Congress government for Trident Group of Industries. Three farmers were killed and several were injured in police firing. An official spokesman said that Chief Minister was in touch with various segments of BKU including the one headed by Ajmer Singh Lakhowal and today's decision comes in wake of wider consensus reached between the government and all representative organizations of the farmers in Punjab. Sukhbir Singh Badal, Member Parliament played a crucial role in bringing the government and the farmers on a common platform. The entire agreement has been brokered by the young MP. Official spokeman said that while farmers in the Left ruled State of West Bengal are braving the State repression, the Parkash Singh Badal led SAD-BJP government has set an precedent for the whole country by formulating a Model Land Acquisition policy on the farmer's land. Earlier today a delegation of farmer's organizations had a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister at Punjab Bhawan. The Chief Minister said that SAD-BJP government was committed to the welfare of farmers. He reiterated the commitment of the SAD-BJP government not to acquire farmer's land forcibly. He said that the state government has already announced new land pooling policy. The Chief Minister announced to give compensations of Rs.5 lacs to the kin of the families of three farmers who died during this agitation and also assured job for one member of their family. At the same time agricultural debt due on the name of deceased farmers would also be borne by the government. The Chief Minister also announced to give compensation of Rs.25, 000/- each to the farmers injured through out the state during this agitation. The Chief Minister also issued directions to all the Deputy Commissioner's to initiate process for withdrawal of different criminal cases against farmers registered during this agitation. Prominent amongst those who participated in the meeting included Chief Secretary Ramesh Inder Singh, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister D.S. Guru, Secretary Power Suresh Kumar. Farmers were led by General Secretary SAD Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra, included Joginder Singh Ugrahan, Sukhdev Singh, Jhanda Singh, Sadhu Singh Takhtpura (All of BKU Ekta) Roop Singh, Bhagat Singh, Balwinder Singh, Bhola Singh (All of Zamin Bachao Committee) Kamalpreet Singh, Satnam Singh, Harjit Singh (All of Kisan Sangharsh Committee, Amritsar). |
