Punjab extends 'Shagun scheme to BC's and Muslims |

CHANDIGARH: In a major decision which would benefit large under-privileged sections of the society , the Punjab government Thursday extended the scope of Shagun scheme to backward classes as well as Muslims.
Announcing this decision after a high level meeting of the officials, the state Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said here today that by taking this decision SAD-BJP government had fulfilled the promise made to the public within the span of four months. The state Welfare department has been asked to undertake the requisite exercise to ensure that no beneficiary in the extended sphere of the scheme was left out of it. The department had been asked to set a definite time frame for completing the formalities so that there was no delay in the implementation of the scheme in its new form. In another major concession, the government also decided to waive the condition regarding the submission of affidavit on annual income of the beneficiaries. The Chief Minister said that the Block Development and Panchayat Officer, Naib Tehsildar, Sub-Divisional Magistrate had been authorized to issue Income Certificates to the beneficiaries in the rural areas of the state. In the urban areas, the same authority would vest in the Executive Magistrate Assistant Commissioner, Joint Commissioner of the concerned areas. Prominent amongst those who were present in the meeting included Gulzar Singh Ranike, Welfare Minister, D.S. Guru, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Secretary Welfare and Director Welfare.
