CHANDIGARH: The police on Saturday resorted to lathi charge and used tear gas shells and water cannons to disperse an irate mob which gheraoed the Mani Majra police station here.
The agitating relatives of Anil Kumar, who died in police custody this Wednesday gheraoed the police station and pelted stones on policemen, demanding registration of murder case against investigating officer Narinder Singh. As many as six policemen as well some mediapersons and residents of the colony were injured following incidents of violence. The crowd later refused to cremate the dead body of Anil Kumar until the police register a case. Protests amidst pleading by the authorities and the police to the crowd continued at the cremation ground till late in the evening. After the intervention of ADC I.S Sandhu, SDM and assurance of prompt investigation into the case by the authorities, the body was finally cremated at around 5pm. 21-year-old Anil Kumar allegedly jumped from the top floor of the Mani Majra Police Station late Wednesday evening after the police was interrogating him on suspicious circumstances. The family of the victim claimed that he was tortured and 'murdered' in custody by the police. Sub Inspector Narinder Singh was suspended yesterday and a departmental enquiry was initiated against him. |
