GURPREET SINGH MEHAK
Wednesday, 25 July 2007

FATEHGARH SAHIB: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar said on Wednesday that  Akal Takht Jathedar would take a decision on complaint against  cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, who attended a Hindu ritual, rudra mahayagya in Amritsar, evoking strong reaction from Siklh bodies.

Dal Khalsa president Satnam Singh Paunta Sahib had complained to  Akal Takht Jathedar  Joginder Singh Vedanti in this regard.

Talking to media persons after presiding over meeting of Managing Committee of Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib  Makkar said that as the complaint against senior BJP leader Sidhu was made to Akal Takht so the Sikh clergy will decide the case. However, he refused to comment on the controversy.

Commenting on the decision of Khalsa Action Committee to sit on hunger strike on front of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s Chandigarh residence on July 26 to lodge their protest over SAD senior vice president Daljit Singh Bittu , Makkar justified the arrest of Bittu. He said that police arrested Bittu as he was spoiling law the order condition.  He said that it is duty of the state government to  maintain law and order so KAC decision to sit on hunger strike is not justified.

On Dera Sacha Sauda row, Makkar said that the Dera chief should directly apologise after appearing on Akal Takht and no mediator can save him. He said that Dera chief is himself responsible for clash between Sikhs and Dera premis last Monday in Haryana.

He blamed the Haryana government for the recent  incident in Sirsa district wherein Sikh youth protesting peacefully were fired at by “premis” of the Dera Sacha Sauda at Malewala village. Condemning the incident, Jathedar of Akal Takht, he  appealed to Sikh masses to practise restraint and maintain communal harmony in both states.

He said in all probability, intelligence agencies of the Haryana government must have got some inkling about the possibility of such a violent attack on members of the Sikh community. It would not be wrong to hold the agencies responsible for the unfortunate incident, he said.

He demanded that the state government should immediately arrest those guilty of the incident and make proper arrangements for the medical treatment of the injured.  He said that Haryana government should play a wider role.

Earlier, while presiding over the managing committee meeting, Makkar said that SGPC will bring important  changes to improve the education standard of its institutions. He said that  efforts will be made to make Mata Gujri College number one college of the state.  Former Minister Randhir Singh Cheema,  SGPC members Didar Singh Bhatti, Satwinder Singh Tohra,College Additional Secretary Ranjit Singh Cheema, Principal Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia also expressed their views.
