FATEHGARH SAHIB: Gurdeep Singh and Surinder Singh, residents of village Basia Vaidwan in Fatehgarh Sahib district could never forget the two years of their prime age, they were made to spend in the jail for a murder of a chemist who was actually committed by Jagtar Singh Hawara, now sentenced to death in Beant Singh assassination case.
Hawara's confession before the cops two years after arrest of two youth in the murder case had led to their acquittal. The police torture and harrassment to their families still haunt Gurdeep Singh and Surinder Singh. Another co-accused in this case Karamjit Singh had committed suicide after release from jail. They are not in a position either to hail or flay the death sentence to Hawara. They said on Wednesday that if they will favour the court's decision of death penalty to Hawara, hardliners may harass them or police will find a point to harrass them. It may be mentioned here that Bassi Pathana police had booked four persons, Gurdeep Singh and his brother Karamjit Singh of Bhagatpura village, Surinder Singh of Todarmajra village and Jaspal Singh of Salempura village near Tohana in Haryana in connection with murdere of Jasbir Singh on September 30, 2004. On the statement of Jasbir's brother, Rajinder Singh , a case was registered at that time. Jagtar Singh Hawara after fleeing from Burail jail, Chandigarh along with his accomplices had committed murder of Jasbir Singh but the police implicated innocent persons in the court. This fact come to fore with Hawara's confession to police that he along with two of his accomplices had killed the chemist Jasbir Singh as he was police informer and responsible for death of many militants. After the revelation of actual facts, the then Fatehgarh Sahib SSP Varinder Kumar presented the real facts in court. After running from pillar to post to get justice, Gurdeep, Surinder and Karamjit were finally discharged as Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed the case. Police had registered a case under section 182 of the IPC against Rajinder Singh for his false statement. His case is still pending in a Fatehgarh Sahib based court. The family members were all praise for former Fatehgarh Sahib SSP Varinder Kumar for his upright role in the case. |
