PATIALA: Even as Punjab government on Tuesday said that there was no proposal to review the medical college fees revised recently, certain minsiters in SAD-BJP government have registered their protest agaisnt hike in the medical college fees.
Highly placed sources said here that health minister and Punjab BJP leader Laxmi Kanta Chawla has lodged her protest, against another party leader and colleague Tikshan Sood, with the BJP High Command. She reportedly was more critical about Sood and complained about recent fee hike in private medical colleges. She was against steep hike for about 300 % in the fee structure of management quota in private colleges. She has conveyed her view to party high command that Tikshan Sood did not give patient hearing to the medical students of Punjab rather he has become the mouthpiece of the management of private colleges. When contacted she has refused to comment and said that she came to Chandigarh after five days and only the ministers' incharge or BJP state president could comment on this. Secretary Medical Education Jagjit Puri in Chandgarh told The Pioneer that there was no reason for withdrawl of medical fees. He said that only 17 percent of students have been effected. He said that whereas in some other states a paid seat has the fee of Rs.two lakh, in Punjab it is still pegged at Rs.1.25 lakhs. he said taht similarly, Punjab has the lowest fees for NRI seats. The parents of students have apprised of their problem to SAD working president Sukhbir Singh Badal here on Sunday last and demanded Rs 1-lakh fee to be charged from students on the basis merit list. However, the government fixed Rs 3 lakh per annum fee for management quota seats and Rs 1.15 lakh for government quota seats. By doing so, the government has adopted dual fee structure in merits seats, which is illegal. |
