Stephen's girls lift Mother Veronica Cup

CHANDIGARH:   Strong contenders St Stephen's School, Sector 45 huffed and puffed to eke out a narrow 1-0 triumph over a never-say-die Carmel Convent School, Sector 9 in the final of the Chandigarh Sub-Junior Girls Under-17  Football Championship for Mother Veronica Cup, sponsored by Carmel Convent School, at the Sector 17 Football Stadium here today.

 



The match was evenly contested and both teams had their share of  chances to score. St Stephen's who enjoyed a slight edge over their rivals,  snatched the all-important goal in the 48th minute. Left winger Rubal Singh sent a measured minus to Harleen Randhawa who made no mistake to guide the ball into the goal.

Both teams played with crowed defence and Stephen's star striker  Shikha Sharma, who was leading scorer with six goals, was today tightly marked by the Carmel Convent defenders. Still she created many openings but a tight Carmel Convent defence thwarted all her moves.

  Carmel Convent School Principal Sister Maria Christie distributed the prizes. Teams: St Stephen's-45: Shikha Sharma,  Rubal Singh, Shruti Sharma,  Puneet Chahal, Amanpreet, Gauri Bhaita, Inayat Pathania, Gurleen Kaur, Aisha, Harleen Randhawa, Shivani Sood.

Carmel Convent: Nitya Sharma, Pallavi Dhawan, Jaspreet Kaur Rishi,  Kudrat Sandhu, Sharika Kaul Devika Pathak, Parul, Ekta Kochar Geisinger,  Namrata Kochar Geisinger, Meghna Bhasin and Ishita Bansal.
