AMRITSAR: Diabetes is the leading cause of death due to heart attack and stroke, and the main cause of blindness and kidney failure in developed countries.

Making these observations, Prof. J.S Bajaj Emritus Professor and Chairman, Academic Council, National Academy of Medical Sciences said that recent figures from the World Health Organization indicate that 3.2 million deaths worldwide are attributable to diabetes every year, i.e. 6 deaths every minute. He said people with diabetes are 15 to 40 times more likely to require a lower-limb amputation compared with the general population.

Other countries such as China (26.8 million), United States (16 million), Russia (9.7 million) and Japan (6.7 million) follow India in that order. He said presently, as well as in the future, the persons with diabetes in developing countries would outnumber those in the highly industrialized nations.
