AMRITSAR: Hindu Organisation Shiv Sena (Balthackrey) on Saturday brunt the effigy of SGPC (Shriomani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) President Avtar Singh Makkar at the busiest Gandhi Gate here.
Effigy of Makkar was burnt in protest against the installation of portrait of slain militant leader and former chief of Damdami Taksal Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in the museum of the Golden Temple. Those who were present when effigy of Makkar was burnt Punjab vice president of Shiv Sena (Balthackrey) Baldev Bhardwaj, District president Vippan Kumar Nayyer and other activsts. The portrait of Bhindranwale was installed in the museum of the Golden Temple on November 29. During the installation ceremony SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar, Jatehdar Akal Takht Gyani Joginder Singh Vedanti, Isher Singh son of slain militant leader Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and serving chief of Damdami Taksal Baba Harnam Singh Dhuma were also present besides others. Bhindranwale was the leader of armed militants who had fortified the Golden Temple complex during in 1984 and was accused of propagating terrorism in Punjab. Bhindranwale and hundreds of other alleged extremists were killed inside the complex when Indian Army launched ‘Operation Bluestar' in June 1984 in order to flush out the hiding militants in the Golden Temple. During operation Blue Star Golden Temple and its marbled periphery besides water pool suffered extensive damage, whereas the Akal Takht (highest Sikh temporal seat) was reduced to ash which was reconstructed again in 1984. |
