NAWANSHAHR:Setting up a new precedent and creating a sort of history, a newly married young couple of nearby village Bheen organized a blood donation camp on the occasion of their reception on Friday.
Social activist Charanjit Singh, associated with a number of NGOs here, who married Rajwinder Kaur on Thursday (Photos attached) donated blood along with his wife and `38 other persons at the camp organized in association with the local Blood Donors' Council. Charanjit's family members including his mother Amarjit Kaur, brother Manjit Singh, sister Gurdip Kaur, maternal uncle Gurbakhsh Singh, uncle Avtar Singh and a few other relatives were among those who donated blood on the occasion.
The donors also included five other couples. Noted social activists of the area including octogenarian Baba Naubat Rai, HELP general secretary Parvinder Singh Kittna, Upkar's Gurcharan Singh Basiala and Jaspal Singh Gidda, Avtar Singh were present to bless the donors. "The step will certainly motivate others to donate blood on such occasions," they said. Satpal Bansal, a pioneer in blood donation movement from Patiala who donated blood for the record 134 th time at the camp, said that such camps should become a part of our culture. Not only this, instead of presenting gifts and mementos to the donors as is the custom on such occasions, all the donors were given saplings of plants like Neem, Deik, Sagwan, Toon etc. as gifts. "This was to show our environment-related concerns," said Charanjit for whom it was his 18 th donation. Earlier, Charanjit had spearheaded the eye donation movement in the area by donating the eyes of her grandmother after her death.
